Two years ago, my uncle Haq was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a neuromuscular disorder which causes motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord to shrink and dissappear, thereby disabling the muscles to receive signals to move. In its early stages, the patient finds difficulty in moving his arms and legs. In its later stages, simple actions like clenching the fist and breathing become impossible to do.
Currently, there is no known cause or cure for the disease. My family hopes to change this. My cousins started a website called "Noor Haq's Hope" to help my uncle, and other ALS patients find a cure. Please visit the site to learn more about the disease and what you can do to help eliminate it. As my uncle says, "never give up hope." - Alina
